NC insurance companies use information such as the brand/model of vehicle you drive, where you live, how you use your vehicle along with the amount of coverage and deductibles you select to determine the prices they will offer you. To meet the North Carolina financial responsibility law regarding auto insurance coverage you must purchase at least the minimum amount. The current minimum liability limits are $30,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. This required minimum coverage is often referred to as 30/60/25. NC insurance companies recommend drivers in your state carry more than the state-minimum liability coverage.
Buying a policy that only includes state-minimum requirements may help motorists get the lowest premiums. But North Carolina uses the tort system to determine who will pay for expenses that result because of a car accident. The driver found to be at fault for the accident is responsible for paying ALL costs incurred. The NC state minimum required liability auto insurance coverage does provide some protection, but those drivers who cause an accident will have to pay out of their pocket for damage that goes over their policy's coverage amounts. Liability coverage does not cover repair to their vehicle or medical expenses for them or their passenger(s). Collision coverage covers those expenses and Comprehensive coverage covers things like fire, theft, vandalism, etc.

If your automobile is financed you will most likely have to carry both collision and comprehensive coverage per a loan requirement. It can be a tough decision to add collision and comprehensive coverage. Both are optional choices and many choose to purchase them because they cover repairing or replacement of your car. You should determine if this coverage is really needed in your case. If you drive an older car that's not very valuable, it might not be the best idea to insure it for repair and replacement. You'll have to decide if having your repairs covered is really worth paying a higher premium. If your car is worth less than 10 times the premium, buying the coverage may not be cost-effective.
